Rest Day

Monday, May 30 2011 Memorial Day

Decided on a rest day after the heat and 81 miles yesterday.  Wee were outside Louisville and wanted to have some fun.  Driving into the city, we came across a city bike ride with people riding on all types of bikes.  The ride ended on the Ohio riverfront with a Richmond band and festivities.  The closed streets caused some traffic, since it was a holiday, but it was not to bad and gave us a good tour of the city.

Downtown on the waterfront of the Ohio River the "Abbey Road Music Festival" was being held.  This was a three day music festival honoring the Beatles.  There were over 300 bands each playing Beatles cover music.  I was surprised to see the band "The English Channel" on the program.  They are a local Richmond band.  I have heard them play last June at JJ's in Richmond.  They are very good, playing British music from the 60's and 70's.

After touring the downtown area and some of the older residential neighborhoods, we headed to Churchill Downs and the horse races.  The grandstands were not very crowded, but there was a buzz around the track as people placed their bets, ate some good food and experienced a cold drink.  It would not be Churchill Downs without enjoying a mint julep.  The day was hot but there was a cool breeze and we sat in the covered grandstands.  Of course we moved to the rail as the races began.  Joey looked like an old pro with his racing sheet in one hand and beer in the other standing a the rail cheering his horse to the finish.
