Day 28 Cassoday to Medora

Monday, June 13, 2011

Miles 75.06   Total 1784.06   Daily Avg 63.72
Avg Speed 14.7   Max Speed 24.1   Alt climbed 1841

The heat is back and it has brought with it the wind. The wind disguises how hot is really is and we are careful to drink plenty of fluids. The winds were 10 to 15 mph from the south. They build during the day as things heat up. It was interesting watching the wheat and corn fields sway and bend as the winds blew and changed direction and velocity.  Hey, you need to find something to occupy your mind when the scenery never changes.

The past two days we have been in oil field country. Dotted throughout the fields are small oil rigs. Along the road are collection tanks. It is difficult to tell how many of the wells are producing oil or just dry fields.

We finished our ride in Medora and drove into Wichita, KS for the evening.  Not much going on in Wichita. There is a new park and statue “The Keeper of the Plains” built at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers. The park and statue were very impressive with a nice view of the downtown business area.

  1. Hi Jim, Kelly, & Joey,
I tried to post yesterday but I don't think it worked so I'll try again. Your trip is amazing and the blog and pictures are painting an incredible picture of the country. I have been thinking of y'all (does anyone in the heartland say "y'all"?) and spent a very pleasant few hours yesterday reading the blog from start to finish. An adventure of a life time and Sharon is with you every step of the way! Keep on pedalling! Sounds like Joey and Roxie are keeping on top of any bumps in the road.
    xoxo Vicky
