Up early to try and beat the mosquitoes and wind. Kelly and I walked over to the Split Rock Cafe for breakfast before departing at 8:30. We rode the first 20 miles into a strong head wind then turn north and slightly away from the wind for the final 35 miles. Wyoming landscape has changed from the arid high desert to a more lush green grasses with an increasing number of trees as we approach the mountains and Yellowstone.
Cycling along these isolated roads I am amazed at the lack of litter along the roadside. We can ride for miles without seeing a single piece of trash. Residents of the East coast need to take a lesson from Colorado and Wyoming in keeping the roadsides free of trash.
We are staying in Lander, WY at the Silver Spur motel. Another roadside motel covered with orange and green neon lights, giving the motel a 50's look. The motel does have a sparkling fresh swimming pool which hit the spot after our ride. Later in the afternoon we headed out to the Shoshone Indian Reservation which was holding an Indian Pow Wow. Indian tribes from Idaho, North and South Dakota, as well as Colorado and Wyoming were present. The tribes celebrate and demonstrate their tribal heritage with colorful native dress, tribal dancing and music. Following the Pow Wow we stopped at the Shoshone Casino for a quick look around. Slot machines were the only game offerings.
