The morning sun rose on our beautiful campsite and we looked forward to a great day. The terrain has changed from the lush river valleys of Colorado to arid dry land devote of trees and greenery . The first 42 miles into Rawlins went very quickly. . We then had a 33 mile stretch to Lamont which was nothing more than a rundown restaurant where we stopped for lunch at 12:30. Not to bad, 75 miles before lunch. The next town Jeffrey City is still 35 miles away. Eleven miles of that was downhill, which we quickly covered. At that point we turned left to a more westerly heading directly into a strong 20 mph headwind for the final 24 miles to Jeffrey City. We fought our way there anxious for a campground with a hot shower. What we got was a dusty forgotten RV park with three trailers, no showers and no restrooms. We were greeted by swarms of mosquitoes as large as hummingbirds. Quickly we pulled out long pants and shirts in an attempt to avoid as many bites as possible. Our tents were erected in record time.
When first arriving in town were meet Eric and Colette cyclist from The Netherlands heading into the only restaurant and commercial business in town. We joined them at a table to get something to drink and decide where we would spend the night. We soon realized the options were slim and bleak. Our decision was to hang out at the bar for as long as possible and go to the campground at the last moment to avoid the mosquitoes. The Split Rock Bar and Cafe would be our hang out for the next couple of hours. We sat talked, had a few beer, ordered dinner, and used the internet. It was Saturday night in Jeffery City. Margarita night started at 7:00, we hung around and enjoyed a margarita. It was not until after 3 ½ hours that we left the restaurant to tackle the mosquitoes. Once our tents were set Joey, Kelly and Justin headed back to the restaurant with card deck in hand to play “spite and malice” and avoid the mosquitoes. I stayed behind to keep Roxy company and keep an eye on things. Joey later told me the bar had a dozen old cowboys singing Hank Williams and patriotic songs. I would have enjoyed that moment.
