Avg Speed 14.4 Max Speed 45.0 Alt Climbed 4819 ft
You can not ask for a more perfect day. Beautiful weather incredible scenery and great cycling. The first 60 miles were difficult as we climbed up and over the Continental Divide three times today at 7,988 ft, 8,391 ft, and 8,261 ft.
We were blessed today, as we have been the entire trip, our angels are watching over us.. Twice nasty black storm clouds and strong winds brought in rain. The first time we were at Old Faithful and took cover in a restaurant over lunch, the second time I was visiting one of the geyser nature trails when you could see the clouds building I quickly left the trail and found cover at a visitors pavilion. The storms quickly passed the skies returned to there dark blue and we were able to get on our way.
We planned on spending the night at a campground in Madison Junction at 80 miles for the day. The campground was full so we rode another 15 miles into West Yellowstone. As soon as we exited the park we entered our 8
th state Montana. Good bye Wyoming, what a beautiful state to visit. Additionally, one more map has been completed 8 down and 4 to go.
After a terrific steak dinner at "The Cowboy Cafe" in West Yellowstone we drove 6 miles outside of town for the local rodeo. The hometown event played to the family audience allowing the kids to join in and try to remove a flag from the tail of a calf. The audience had a good laugh as the calf outsmarted all the kids until he tired.
I am humbled by the patriotism displayed by the residents of Wyoming and Montana. During the rodeo there was a dedication to all who were serving or had served in the armed forces. Current and past members of the armed services were ask to stand as we were reminded of our freedoms thanks to such brave men and women. This reminded me of the movie "Taking Chance" which is an HBO movie about an Marine officer, played by Kevin Bacon, escorting the remains of Pfc Chance Phelps, killed in Iraq to his home in Dubois, WY. If you have not seen this movie I would highly suggest it especially on this 4th of July weekend.
Yellowstone is a cool place once you get out of the touristy areas and travel the backroads.
